Professor inauguration

All interested parties are welcome to attend the inaugural lecture of newly appointed Professor Haiyan Ou: “Silicon Carbide: The next-generation material platform for optical chips.”

DTU Electro is pleased to invite everyone interested to celebrate the
newly appointed Professor Haiyan Ou.

In her inaugural lecture, Professor Ou will discuss trends and challenges
in photonic nanotechnology and present specific highlights from her work at DTU.

A reception will follow the lecture.

We look forward to celebrating Haiyan and seeing you all there.

Kind regards, DTU Electro
Head of Department Lars-Ulrik Aaen.

Summary
Optical chips are being developed to
overcome the bottlenecks faced by
conventional microchips. While silicon is
the dominant material platform for
microchips, optical chips rely on a variety of
material platforms, each with distinct
advantages and limitations determined by
their intrinsic material properties. In this
lecture, Ou will compare silicon carbide
(SiC) with other material platforms and
present recent advances in SiC-based
nanophotonics and quantum photonics, as
well as innovation-driven research in
optical communications and spectroscopy.
Finally, she will discuss the promising
future of SiC as a next-generation material
platform for optical chips.
Haiyan Ou
Professor Haiyan Ou obtained her PhD
from the Chinese Academy of Sciences in
2000, joining DTU the same year. In 2011,
she was a Visiting Fellow in the research
group of Nobel Laureate Professor Isamu
Akasaki at Meijo University in Japan. Since
2021, she has established and led the
Wide Bandgap Semiconductor Photonics
group. She is a pioneer in applying SiC in
photonics and has significantly advanced
the field through grants including EIC FET
open project SiComb and MSCA DN
project SiCPIC. She has published more
than 280 peer-reviewed papers including
one in Nature, and delivered over 24
invited talks at international conferences.
Besides her research, Prof. Ou is active in
innovation, holding four patents and having
founded Light Extraction ApS with
investment from Seed Capital. She
contributes to the international research
community co-organizing several symposia
and workshops at major conferences, and
serving on the Editorial Board of Scientific
Reports from 2015 to 2021
