In 2050, the global population will number almost 10 billion people according to the UN.
That means 2.3 billion more mouths to feed.
The world is already struggling in this area, with 821 million people going to bed hungry every night, according to the World Food Programme. More food has to be produced, and the total global consumption of animal protein is expected to rise by approx. 70 per cent from 2007 to 2030, according to the ‘Proteins for the future’ report published by the Ministry of Environment and Food of Denmark.
At the same time, more consumers are seeking plant-based proteins, in part because animal proteins are resource-intensive to produce and are linked to negative climate impacts. There are many reasons why the world is focusing on proteins, and looking for new sources of the important nutrient.
