Frederik Warburg received the best Nordic thesis in image analysis and computer vision award in recognition of his excellent and impactful research work reported in his PhD thesis ‘Probabilistic 3D Reconstruction’. The award was presented during the Scandinavian Conference on Image Analysis (SCIA), organised by the Danish Pattern Recognition Society in Reykjavík on June 23-25. The research work was carried out at DTU Compute and the P1 AI Pioneer Center and nominated by the main supervisor Professor Søren Hauberg, DTU Compute and Professor Serge Belongie, University of Copenhagen and P1 AI Pioneer Center.
The pattern recognition societies and communities in Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Denmark had nominated a total of nine theses for consideration for the award. A committee with representatives from the five countries selected the winning thesis. The committee president, Professor Rasmus R. Paulsen, DTU Compute, says:
“We received nominations of an impressive and internationally top-level quality underpinning the very strong tradition and leadership in image analysis and computer vision in Scandinavia. Nonetheless, Frederik Warburg’s thesis stood out in terms of the volume, the excellence, and the impact of the work done.”
SCIA was held in Iceland for the first time. The University of Iceland President Jon Atli Benediktsson, himself a prominent pattern recognition and remote sending researcher, gave the opening address, emphasising Nordic collaboration and academic freedom. A highlight of the conference was the invited talk by volcanologist Gro Birkefelt Møller Pedersen from the Icelandic Meteorological Office on ‘Icelandic volcanoes and how to monitor them’.
