Bringing your family

DTU has several services to help accompanying family members adjust to life in Denmark.

Accompanying spouses & partners

International spouses and partners of DTU employees are often interested in finding meaningful career opportunities in Denmark, but they lack both a social and professional network to help them along the way.

At DTU, we recognize the importance and long term benefits of giving accompanying partners the tools they need to build their network and enter the Danish job market. You can find an overview of all the available tools in DTU’s Spouse Flyer.

Accompanying spouses are invited to join the following networks and events:

We look forward to welcoming you to Denmark.

Children

Nursery and Kindergarten (6 months - 6 years)

In Denmark, there are good public childcare facilities for children aged 6 months – 6 years, and it is common to send children to a nursery (6 months – 3 years) or kindergarten (3 – 6 years) during working hours. Some facilities offer both nursery and kindergarten groups under the same roof. The rates vary depending on where you live and whether your child attends nursery or kindergarten. All public childcare facilties are co-financed by the municipality and monthly fees paid by the parents. It is also possible to find private nurseries and kindergartens, as well as private caregivers.

The Danish childcare system focuses on strengthening children's social, verbal and motor skills. The staff will emphasize values surrounding social relationships such as empathy and responsibility. Danish child-rearing also focuses heavily on play, both through structured activities and free play time, as well as being outdoors -- also in cold or rainy weather. In addition, children will be encouraged to be independent.

It is normal for parents to visit different childcare facilities before signing up for one. Many daycares offer scheduled tour days, where parents can visit and ask questions. Please call the daycare in advance to make an appointment before visiting.

Primary and lower secondary education (6 - 16 years)

The public school system (folkeskole) in Denmark is financed through taxes and is therefore free. Danish is the main language in public schools, and new students who do not speak Danish will receive help so they can become integrated quickly.

There are also private schools, including international schools, where English is often the primary language of instruction.

Upper secondary education (16 - 19 years)

Students can choose between a general education programme, which prepares students for higher education at the university level, or different vocational/technical education programmes.

Certain study programmes are also offered in English. It is also possible to find private international schools offering the International Baccalaureate (IB) degree.
