In a new agreement on scientific advice between DTU and the Danish Defence Intelligence Service (FE), the two institutions aim to enter into collaboration in a number of areas, including advisory services, method development, and competence building.
For many years, DTU’s researchers have contributed to performing key tasks for Danish society such as risk assessment in relation to the environment and food products or support for the coronavirus emergency response. The agreement with FE is based on the same ambition, says DTU Provost Rasmus Larsen:
“There are many research areas where DTU’s special expertise may be relevant to FE, and where it’s in Denmark’s interest that the technologies are used, including in areas such as analysis of large or unstructured amounts of data volumes, encryption, cyber security, and monitoring of critical infrastructure,” he says.
Overall, DTU will contribute with the development of methods that can strengthen FE in its work, and, as the agreement has just been signed, the determination of the specific technologies will now be initiated.
This is the first time that FE makes direct use of the research environment in Denmark to obtain help with the performance of specific tasks. This will include drawing on the researchers’ method development competences.
“FE is a high-tech organization, and our future task performance is highly dependant on how we manage to integrate new technology in our work. For FE, the agreement is a completely new type of collaboration where we open ourselves up even more to the outside world, but which also means that we will be able to provide our own employees with further training and strengthen their abilities to develop solutions to the complex challenges we’re facing," says Carmine Gioia, Head of Technology, Data and AI at FE.
The agreement runs for four years (2023-2026) and covers strategic research, scientific advice, and competence building. FE’s grants to DTU amount to a total of DKK 34 million during the period.
