DTU and Rigshospitalet establish joint clinical professorship

Måns Magnusson is among the world’s leading researchers in his field and leaves a position at Lund University. In his new role, he will support and develop the collaboration between clinical research at Rigshospitalet and technical research at DTU Health Tech.
“Research models and technical working methods, which DTU has had great success with, can be used even more in medicine. Through collaboration and dual affiliation, I hope we can develop new measurement methods and treatments together. We should remember that many medical advances have been made possible by technological development,” says Måns Magnusson.

Stronger link between medicine and technology

Earlier this year, DTU and Rigshospitalet signed a letter of intent to increase collaboration and establish a strategic partnership to strengthen the development and utilisation of technological health solutions for future patients. The creation of a joint clinical professorship has flowed out of this.

Måns Magnussen will become the first clinical professor at DTU, which Jan Henrik Ardenkjær-Larsen, Head of DTU Health Tech, sees great potential in:

“I’m very pleased that we have been able to appoint the first clinical professor at DTU. This is a major step towards bringing medicine closer to the technical research and teaching environments at DTU, intending to create more technological innovation in the healthcare system.”

At Rigshospitalet, Mads Klokker, Chief Physician at the Department of Ear, Nose and Throat Surgery & Audiology and head of Rigshospitalet’s Centre for Hearing and Balance, sees the appointment of Måns Magnusson as a natural extension of the two organisations’ long-standing collaboration:

“We are very pleased to be able to expand the collaboration with our first joint professorship. Shared appointments and joint research projects, which we began with DTU several years ago, are definitely the way forward within innovative clinical MedTech,” he says.

Professorship to lead to new treatments

Måns Magnusson’s primary task is to advance balance research. Måns Magnusson believes many medical problems could be better addressed with the help of the research techniques available at DTU. He will, therefore, develop new examination techniques for patients with balance disorders and dizziness—including motion sickness.

“We aim to combine skills and knowledge to solve problems and implement solutions in healthcare and society faster. Hopefully, the collaboration will lead not only to frontline research but also to treatments for patients that we cannot treat today and improvements to existing treatments. The main goal of both care and research is to create a better life for more people,” he says.
