DTU is at the very top of the EngiRank EU ranking, which assesses 226 technical universities in 27 EU countries, Switzerland and Norway. The ranking is based on a broad selection of recognized EU data sources.
"It is a great pleasure that DTU is at the very top. First place in EngiRank is the result of a shared focus on delivering world-class research, education and innovation. The result is due to the impressive work of students, staff and partners," says DTU President Anders Bjarklev.
This is the second time EngiRank has ranked technical universities in the EU and the second time DTU has been recognized as the best university. EngiRank only ranks the technical universities in the EU, but has this year expanded the list to include Norway and Switzerland, with two institutions from both countries. English universities are not included in the ranking.
Quality in research and education
DTU is ranked number one in EngiRank's overall ranking, which is based on 13 indicators across five criteria: Research, innovation, internationalization, interdisciplinarity and the UN's SDG 9, which aims to build resilient infrastructure, promote sustainable industrialization and foster innovation.
The ranking emphasizes research and innovation funding, as well as universities' international alliances and collaboration.
"DTU wants to be the university of innovation. We have invested in creating an innovation environment characterized by incentive and interest and with a wide range of programs and funding. Today, it is a vibrant part of DTU's research and education programs, which EngiRank's ranking underlines," says Anders Bjarklev.
EngiRank's primary criteria are: research, innovation, teaching quality and universities' work with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. In addition, it operates with seven subject rankings, where DTU's ranking can be seen here:
- Chemical Engineering: 1
- Civil Engineering: 1
- Electrical, electronic and information engineering: 3
- Environmental engineering: 1
- Materials engineering: 4
- Mechanical Engineering: 1
- Medical Engineering: 3
EngiRank was initiated by the Polish ‘Perspektywy’ Education Foundation, which has been publishing the Perspektywy University Ranking and several rankings of secondary schools and MBA programs in Poland for almost 25 years. The rankings are based on recognized data sources such as CORDIS and the European Education Area, and also include publication and citation statistics based on the Scopus database and patent statistics from the European Patent Office. The figures are not based on reputation surveys or self-reporting by universities.
The main partners of EngiRank are Poland's national agency for Erasmus+, the Foundation for the Development of the Education System - FRSE, and academic publisher Elsevier, which provided data support. Partners also include the IREG Observatory on Academic Ranking and Excellence (an international organization of rankers and analysts of academic rankings) and the Engineers Europe professional organization.
