neuroinformatics Bioinformatics machine learning
Ole Winther’s (OW) research subject is machine learning. Machine learning combines statistical modelling and artificial intelligence, drawing inspiration from neuroscience for model building and often deals with large amounts of data. OW works with methods development and applications in bioinformatics (computer-driven large scale biological data analysis), neuroinformatics, and recommender systems. For example, collaborative filtering can be used to learn personalized movie recommendations from data bases of the users' taste. The fundamental methods have many application in the information society and modern data-driven sciences. OW has published 100+ scientific papers, has supervised/is currently supervising 15+ PhD-students plus 40+ master projects and is collaborating with companies and research institutions such as Siemens Windpower, GreenGoEnergy, Tradeshift and Biotech Research and Innovation Centre (BRIC), University of Copenhagen (KU). Ole Winther (Cand. Scient. physics, Bac. computer science, 94 and PhD physics 98, KU) has been post doc at Lund University, Sweden and Center for Biological Sequence Analyse, Technical University of Denmark (DTU). OW is professor at Cognitive Systems (CogSys), DTU Compute, DTU and group leader in Bioinformatics, KU. More information is available from http://cogsys.compute.dtu.dk/staff/winther/ .
