EXPERTISE Basic and molecular microbiology: Culturing aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, isolation and characterization of gut bacteria, in vitro growth assays, microscopy, DNA/RNA extraction, primer design/validation, PCR, qPCR, RT-qPCR, molecular cloning, restriction enzyme analysis, transcriptomics, next generation sequencing (whole genome, transcriptome and 16S rRNA amplicon based). Bioinformatics, data analysis and statistics: Genome assembly, transcriptome analysis, 16S rRNA amplicon sequence analysis. Data analysis, uni- and multivariate statistics and data-visualization of microbiome data. Data integration of complex human cohort study data on microbiome, dietary patterns, anthropometrical data, health parameters and environmental factors. Laboratory animal experimentation: Design and management of animal experiments in conventional and/or germ free/gnotobiotic mice, investigating bacterial colonization, influence of HMOs/prebiotics, bacterial in vivo metabolism, in vivo production of therapeutics via engineered probiotics, impact of gut microbes on immune function and disease models of inflammatory bowel diseases. Infant gut microbiome: Expert knowledge on the factors that influence the development of the infant gut microbiota, through many years of work with multidisciplinary data analysis from separate infant cohort/intervention studies and very strong literature knowledge within the field.
