Applying for an MSc at DTU - English language requirements
Here you will find all the information you need to document your English language skills.
Please note the requirements have been updated and will apply from the admissions period starting on 15 August 2026.
DTU General Engineering students are exempted from taking a language test
Applicants who need to document their English proficiency through a language test should submit one of the following approved test.
All submitted English language tests are verified by DTU.

You must upload an official score report with your application. DTU does not receive test results directly from test providers. It is your responsibility to ensure that the official score report is uploaded by the application deadline.
DTU does not grant exemptions from the minimum test score requirements. Applicants who do not meet the required scores cannot be admitted.
Please note that TOEFL iBT and IELTS Academic are valid for 2 years from the test date.
* Only IELTS Academic tests are accepted. DTU does not accept IELTS One Skill Retake.
** DTU does not accept “My Best Scores”.
*** Applicants submitting a Cambridge English qualification must share their results directly with DTU through the Cambridge English Results Service for Candidates. Cambridge English Results Service for Candidates
- English B-level – passed (minimum grade of 02)
- English A-level – passed (minimum grade of 02)
You must upload your upper-secondary school certificate to your application.
Applicants with an upper-secondary school certificate from the Nordics (Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland) may fulfill the English language requirements if their English courses are comparable with English B-level.

You must upload your upper-secondary school diploma in the original language to your application.
Applicants with an IB diploma may fulfill the English language requirements if their English courses are comparable with English B-level. You must have passed the courses with a minimum grade of 3.
The following IB courses are accepted:
- English B, standard level (SL)
- English A1, A2 or B, higher level (HL)
- English A1 or A2 standard level (SL)
- English A Literature or English A Language and Literature, higher level (HL)
- English A Literature or English A Language and Literature, standard level (SL)
Please note that the European Baccalaureate (EB) is a specific qualification awarded by the European Schools system. It is not the same as a national upper secondary school diploma from a European country.
Applicants with an EB diploma may fulfill the English language requirements if their English courses are comparable with English B-level. You must have passed the courses with a minimum grade of 50.00 (from 2021) or 60.00 (before 2021).
The following EB courses are accepted:
- English level I (L I)
- English level II (L II)
- English level III (L III)
- English level IV (L IV)
DTU does not accept the following as proof of English language proficiency:
- A diploma from an upper secondary education, bachelor's degree, or master's degree where English was the language of instruction.
- Statements from universities, teachers or employers
- English language tests other than those approved by DTU
- A combination of several incomplete qualifications
Incomplete or unclear documentation of English language proficiency will result in your application not being considered for admission.
