Aquaculture - Specialization
Aquaculture specialization
From a global perspective aquaculture is one of the fastest growing primary industries. In recent years, the aquaculture-based production of fish and shellfish have exceeded capture based production. Graduates with a specialization in aquaculture are needed to ensure the continued growth of the aquaculture industry, which must be achieved through the pursuance of technological improvements and advances in every aspect from facility design to feed manufacture. The specialization covers production systems and methods from low trophic aquaculture (seaweed and shellfish) to production of fish for consumption, with an overarching focus on sustainability, resource use, and environmental footprint. The specialization covers the overall design of production systems for different organisms, technical solutions to water treatment, the nutritional requirements of organisms in production, feed manufacture, selection of raw materials and circular economy, animal welfare in aquaculture, diseases, genetics, physiology of farmed organisms, nutrients and cleaning measures, and environmental impact. The specialization has a focus on land-based production systems, and an aim that students are able to conceive production systems with appropriately dimensioned components, that satisfy the requirements of the produced species.
To obtain the specialization in Aquaculture the following programme specific courses are mandatory:

and 10 ECTS must be chosen among the following courses:
25315 | Genetic methods in aquaculture | 5 | point | January |
25317 | Diseases and veterinary aspects related to aquaculture | 5 | point | Autumn E1B (Thurs 13-17) |
