Collaboration agreements on PhD programme

A collaboration agreement on a PhD programme is used where DTU collaborates with a company on the completion of a study programme for a PhD student.

DTU has three templates for collaboration agreements on PhD programmes. The choice of templates depends on the funding of the PhD student and the place of employment.

Industrial PhD scheme

This type of collaboration agreement is used in projects in which the PhD student is employed in the company and is enrolled as a PhD student at DTU, and where the principal supervisor is a researcher employed at DTU.

The collaboration is funded partly by Innovation Fund Denmark via the Industrial PhD scheme. The funding is paid as a grant to the company. The funding contribution to DTU is paid by Innovation Fund Denmark. The results of the PhD student’s work accrue to the company. Therefore, the agreement only regulates the principal supervisor’s results under the project, for which the company is granted a rights option.

The rights option entitles the companies to take over or licence the department’s results in a further defined area, called ‘Field’. A transfer or licence must be made on market terms.

Employment with company

This type of collaboration agreement is used in projects in which the PhD student is employed in the company and is enrolled as a PhD student at DTU, and where the principal supervisor is a researcher employed at DTU. The company must, as a minimum, cover DTU’s direct costs, including funding contributions and other agreed costs.

Employment at DTU

This type of collaboration agreement is used in projects in which the PhD student is employed at DTU, and where the principal supervisor is a researcher employed at DTU. The collaboration is partly financed by the company, which covers an agreed share of the costs.

The results of the PhD student’s work accrue to DTU. Therefore, the agreement regulates both the PhD student’s and the principal supervisor’s results under the project, for which the company is granted a rights option. The rights option entitles the companies to take over or licence the department’s results in a further defined area, called ‘Field’. A transfer or licence must be made on market terms.
