Acoustics - Specialization
Acoustics is a wide field that includes topics such as human perception of sound and auditory modelling, electroacoustic systems and audio coding, architectural acoustics, sound fields and vibration, and advanced acoustic measurement techniques.
The MSc Eng programme Engineering Acoustics is ideal for BSc graduates in engineering, physics or mathematics who have an interest in all these aspects of sound. If you are more interested in the ‘electrical’ aspects of sound you can specialize in the study line ‘Acoustics’.
Graduates from this study line typically find employment in the hearing aid industry (e.g. Oticon, Widex, GN ReSound), in companies manufacturing acoustic transducers and sound and vibration measurement equipment (e.g., Brüel & Kjær, G.R.A.S.), in companies involved in audio engineering (e.g., Bang & Olufsen), and in companies specialized in noise and vibration consultancy (e.g., Ødegaard & Danneskiold-Samsøe, Müller-BBM).

Core competence - mandatory
The natural introduction to the study line 'Acoustics' is the core competence course 34870 Electroacoustic Transducers and Systems.
Note, however, that this course has the course 34840 'Fundamentals of Acoustics and Noise Control' as a prerequisite. Students who did not take this course (or an equivalent) during their BSc programme should take this during the first semester of the MSc programme, and then follow 34870 'Electroacoustic transducers and systems' in the 3rd semester as it is not recommended to follow the two courses simultaneously.
34870 | Electroacoustic transducers and systems | 10 | point | Autumn E2 (Mon 13-17, Thurs 8-12) |
Innovation II - choose 5 ECTS among the following course:
34847 | Innovation Camp | 5 | point | August |
34848 | Challenges in Acoustic Microsystems | 5 | point | January |
Choose 35 ECTS among the programme specific courses to obtain the specialization:
34846 | Environmental acoustics | 5 | point | June |
34848 | Challenges in Acoustic Microsystems | 5 | point | January |
34850 | Architectural acoustics | 10 | point | Spring F4 (Tues 13-17, Fri 8-12) |
34860 | Advanced acoustics | 10 | point | Spring F2 (Mon 13-17, Thurs 8-12) |
34865 | Numerical acoustics | 5 | point | Spring F3A (Tues 8-12) |
34871 | Nonlinear transducers | 5 | point | January |
34880 | Structure-borne sound | 10 | point | Autumn E4 (Tues 13-17, Fri 8-12) |
Elective Courses
This group contains all DTU's advanced level courses. In addition to regular courses, special courses are also accepted in this group of courses, provided that the topic and level of the special course is approved by DTU supervisors. Instead you may also choose to follow more programme specific courses or conduct a MSc thesis of 35 ECTS.
Specializations are merely recommended ways of choosing the courses in the curriculum. Applicants are not admitted to a specialization but to the programme and it is possible to choose among all the courses in the curriculum following the directions given. However, if a specialization has been fulfilled the title of the specialization may be added to the diploma.
