Instrumentations and Applications - Specialization

Photonics: Instrumentations and Applications

This technological specialization is aimed at students with interrests in the instrumentation and applications of optics and photonics. The suggested courses include the understanding of optics and photonics, how to design, construct and characterize optical systems for various applications, and how to acquire data and carry out signal processing. The competences prepare you to work with optical communication systems, illumination and lighting systems, to work with various types of laser systems, optical sensors and measurement systems for a variety of applications. These applications could be, spectroscopy, biophotonics, medical diagnostics and optical metrology within many other engineering disciplines.

The following programme specific courses are mandatory for this technological specialization.

34041 Waveguide optics 5 point Spring F4B (Fri 8-12)
34061 Optical measurement methods and signal analysis 5 point Spring F5B (Wed 13-17)

Then, the student has to pick at least 20 ECTS amount the following programme specific courses list below:

22603 Light microscopy for life science 5 point Autumn E3A (Tues 8-12)
34032 Optical properties of solids 5 point Autumn E1B (Thurs 13-17)

 Proposed study plans

Three examples for study plans are listed below.

Note: 34046 is available in January and should be completed as early as possible.

The course 34043 is available in both spring and fall - In this case the third semester is suggested.

Specializations are merely recommended ways of choosing the courses in the curriculum. Applicants are not admitted to a specialization but to the programme and it is possible to choose among all the courses in the curriculum following the directions given. However, if a specialization has been fulfilled the title of the specialization may be added to the diploma.
