Quantum Photonics - Specialization
Photonics: Quantum Photonics
Quantum Photonics is a thriving research field that embraces quantum physics, nanotechnology and important applications. These years we witness the transfer from research labs to the industry of innovative and valuable technologies, while others still require decades of fundamental research. This technological specialization is set up to address these challenges and has three main objectives:
1. To prepare the student for the quantum photonics technology of tomorrow, as applied, e.g., in quantum simulators, quantum computers and the quantum internet.
2. To equip the student with basic and advanced knowledge about the physics and the technology of the platform (e.g., nanophotonics, quantum optics, quantum photonic communication).
3. To give the student hands-on experience with advanced nanofabrication & the key experiments that reveal the nature of quantum photonics (e.g., quantum light source, two-photon interference, quantum entanglement).
The following programme specific course is mandatory for this technological specialization.
34051 | Nanophotonics | 10 | point | Spring F1 (Mon 8-12, Thurs 13-17) |
Then, the student has to pick at least 20 ECTS amount the following programme specific courses list below:
10380 | Quantum Optics | 10 | point | Spring F4 (Tues 13-17, Fri 8-12) |
10855 | Advanced fabrication of micro- and nanostructures | 10 | point | Autumn E2 (Mon 13-17, Thurs 8-12) and Autumn E5 (Wed 8-17) |
34032 | Optical properties of solids | 5 | point | Autumn E1B (Thurs 13-17) |
34041 | Waveguide optics | 5 | point | Spring F4B (Fri 8-12) |
34042 | Quantum photonic communication | 5 | point | Autumn E5A (Wed 8-12) |
34052 | Nonlinear optics | 10 | point | Autumn E3 (Tues 8-12, Fri 13-17) |
34053 | Numerical methods in photonics | 5 | point | Spring F2A (Mon 13-17) |
34062 | Photonic integrated circuits | 10 | point | Spring F3 (Tues 8-12, Fri 13-17) |
34153 | Physical concepts in optical communication | 5 | point | Spring F3A (Tues 8-12) |
Proposed study plans
Note: 34046 is available in January and should be completed as early as possible.
The course 34043 is available in both spring and fall - In this case the third semester is suggested.
Specializations are merely recommended ways of choosing the courses in the curriculum. Applicants are not admitted to a specialization but to the programme and it is possible to choose among all the courses in the curriculum following the directions given. However, if a specialization has been fulfilled the title of the specialization may be added to the diploma.
