Are you interested in designing and producing the products of tomorrow? For example by implementing sustainable or new digital solutions in production and products? On the Mechanical Engineering study programme, you will learn to develop innovative products and find solutions, to help ensure future sustainable development that focus on people. For example, you may work with CO2-neutral transport solutions, recycling technologies, or energy. You will operate in the overlap between people, the environment, production, and economics.

What will you learn?

As a mechanical engineering student, you will learn about engineering in relation to production technology and design, as well as about robots and automation. You will be taught technical science subjects such as mathematics, mechanics, dynamics, and materials science.

You will learn how to construct, design, and manufacture industrial products, and you will learn this from the perspective of environmental awareness and sustainability. You will learn how to handle the green transition for production and products. 

Study programme structure

During your first three semesters you will have mandatory subjects such as mechanics, energy technology, automation, product development, and design.

From semester 4 you can specialize in a field of particular interest to you. You can choose between fields such as design, energy, maritime engineering, mechatronics, or materials and manufacturing.

During semester 5 you do an internship in a company. This will give you valuable insight into the role and work of a mechanical engineer. The study programme ends with your BEng project, which you normally do in collaboration with a company. 

Career opportunities

As a mechanical engineer, you can get jobs in many different industries and sectors. You can work in industries like the wind turbine industry, the pharmaceutical industry, offshore, companies in the plastics industry, power companies, power plants, the refrigeration industry, food production, electronics production, and the consultancy or transport sector. In general, the tasks are characterized by interaction between people, and the nature of the tasks is typically connected with the size of the company.

In small companies, you will cover a wide range of technical fields and tasks, and you will become the pivot for important production decisions. In large companies, you will generally start off as a designer in the development department, before working your way up to specialist, project manager, head of department, or senior manager — depending on your abilities and interests.

Many mechanical engineers also choose to start their own business.
