Bornholm

For 20 years, Bornholm has been a test island and living lab for electricity and energy technologies and functions as a “mini-society” where laboratories at DTU are connected to the Bornholm energy system. Here, DTU PowerLab tests the green technologies of the future in a flexible environment that functions as a living energy laboratory.

Based on the test island and the potential future energy island Bornholm with over 3 GW offshore wind, DTU works closely with Baltic Energi Island and the Bornholm stakeholders to achieve the vision of creating an international hub for green energy technologies.

DTU students collaborate with companies on concrete solutions on 3-week courses, and some write their bachelor's project or master's thesis in collaboration with a Bornholm company.

In 2028, the newly renovated Rønne Power Station will open as an innovation hub and communication centre, where DTU will rent space.
