If you have a hearing impairment
There is a significant difference in the challenges faced by individuals with a hearing impairment, and therefore, suitable solutions for student life can often vary.
As a student with a hearing impairment, in addition to the more obvious challenges, you may also experience difficulties with:
- concentrating while studying
- endurance
- getting an overview of your studies
- structuring and planning your study course.
- Clarification of support needs by a hearing consultant
The assessment aims to clarify how you can best be compensated for your disability. - Assessment of hearing technology aids
The assessment may point towards support in the form of technical aids, such as a micro link or hearing system. A micro link is a wireless receiver that connects to a hearing aid. It transmits sound, captured in a classroom from a microphone. A hearing system is a setup used in conjunction with the micro link. Typically, a hearing system includes a microphone for the lecturer, two microphones for capturing students' speech, and a mixer that sends the sound to the student's micro link. - Secretarial assistance
Assistance with taking notes during lectures.
- Academic support teacher
Typically, this would involve a lecturer from your field of study. It can be challenging to capture all information during class, and the academic support sessions can, for example, be used for follow-up on the academic material covered during lecturers, as well as to help develop academic strategies that support learning.
- Assessment and clarification of support needs
During the conversation, you will work with a consultant to determine which type of support best suits your needs. Following the conversation, one or more types of support will be recommended, such as interpreter assistance, which includes sign language interpretation and note-taking assistance during lectures. - Academic support teacher
