If you have a visual impairment

There is a significant difference in the challenges faced by individuals with visual impairment; therefore, suitable solutions for student life can often vary.

As a student with a visual impairment, in addition to the more obvious challenges, you may also experience difficulties with:
  • concentrating while studying
  • endurance
  • getting an overview of your studies
  • structuring and planning your study course.
As a student with a visual impairment, you can receive different forms of support:

Assessment and clarification of support needs
The assessment takes place at IBOS (The Danish Institute for Visual Impairment, Rymarksvej 1, Hellerup). During the conversation, you will work with a consultant from IBOS to determine which type of support best suits your needs. After the conversation, IBOS will recommend one or more types of support, such as:
  • Electronic study materials (NOTA)
With a NOTA grant, you have access to digital study materials.
  • Software package
E.g., Intowords, which can read study materials aloud.
  • IT starter kit and remote support
The starter kit includes a powerful laptop with special software and possibly additional hardware tailored to visually impaired and blind students. In conjunction with the allocation of the starter kit, a subscription to remote support is provided, which instructs on using the IT starter kit.
  • Various aids
    Whiteboard camera, special lamps, etc.
  • Secretarial assistance
Help with notetaking, assistance with major assignments, exam registration, copying, information retrieval at libraries, etc.
  • Mobility
A visual consultant teaches how to navigate through the education or at an internship site.
  • Academic support teacher
Typically, this would involve a lecturer from your field of study. It can be challenging to capture all information during lectures, and the academic support sessions can, for example, be used for follow-up on the academic material covered during lecturers, as well as to help develop academic strategies that support learning.

All IT aids are on loan and must be returned if you either discontinue or complete your education.
